Saudi Arabia is home to the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah, making accurate prayer times essential for millions of residents and pilgrims. As visitor numbers grow with the ongoing expansions of the Two Holy Mosques, clear city-specific schedules become even more important. This directory uses the Umm al-Qura calendar — the official standard established by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs — for every city we cover.

The Kingdom spans nearly 2 million km², meaning prayer times can differ significantly between cities. Fajr in Al Qurayyat (far north) may be 25+ minutes different from Jazan (far south) on certain days. These differences are tied precisely to each city's latitude, longitude, and solar angle. That is why we provide separate, city-specific timetables rather than one national schedule.

Whether you live in Riyadh, work in Dammam, or are visiting Makkah or Madinah, you will find Umm al-Qura calculated times for your city here — with a live countdown to the next salah. Adhan and congregational iqamah inside the Two Holy Mosques follow the official Haramain schedules and on-site announcements from the competent authorities (including the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques and the Presidency of Religious Affairs), so confirm locally inside the Haram before praying in congregation.

Prayer times are determined by the sun's position relative to the horizon at each geographic location. Fajr and Isha depend on the sun's angle below the horizon, while Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib relate to solar noon and shadow lengths.

  • Fajr (الفجر): Begins at true dawn, when the sun is 18.5° below the horizon — the specific angle used by Umm al-Qura.
  • Sunrise (الشروق): The moment the sun crosses the horizon. Fajr must be prayed before this time.
  • Dhuhr (الظهر): Begins the moment the sun passes solar noon (zenith), casting the shortest shadow of the day.
  • Asr (العصر): Begins when an object's shadow equals its own length plus the shadow at noon. This Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali method is what Umm al-Qura uses.
  • Maghrib (المغرب): Begins immediately at sunset — one of the most precisely timed prayers.
  • Isha (العشاء): Begins when the red twilight fully disappears, at 17° below the horizon per Umm al-Qura.

The Umm al-Qura calendar is the official national standard used by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Islamic Affairs and the Ministry of Justice. It is built on precise astronomical calculations anchored to Makkah's position, then adjusted per each city's coordinates. This ensures official consistency while preserving geographical accuracy.

Each degree of latitude shifts Fajr and Isha by several minutes. Each degree of longitude shifts Dhuhr and Maghrib by approximately 4 minutes. Riyadh (longitude 46.6°) has Dhuhr about 30 minutes later than Jeddah (longitude 39.1°). This is why you must never use another city's timetable for your own.

Ramadan intensifies the need for accurate prayer times. Suhoor ends at Fajr time and Iftar begins at Maghrib. Here is what matters most:

  • Suhoor: Suhoor ends when Fajr time begins according to the listed schedule; confirm with your local mosque when needed.
  • Iftar: You may break your fast as soon as Maghrib time is reached, confirmed by the adhan.
  • Taraweeh: Saudi mosques typically hold Taraweeh immediately after Isha. Confirm your mosque's schedule locally.
  • Tahajjud / Qiyam: The best time is the final third of the night — our city pages display this time automatically alongside the five prayers.
  • City differences: Ramadan makes the north–south difference in Fajr most visible — sometimes 25+ minutes between Al Qurayyat and Jazan.

We always recommend cross-checking with your local mosque, especially for Fajr and Maghrib during Ramadan.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged his companions to keep the congregational prayer and reminded them that every step to the mosque brings reward and elevation. He gave glad tidings to those who guard the prayers on time, promising them light in this life and the next. These meanings strengthen the heart's certainty that prayer is more than a routine; it is a wide door to reward and tranquility. With each call to prayer, a new opportunity for closeness to Allah begins, and consistency brings peace and uprightness. He said ﷺ: "The deeds most beloved to Allah are those done consistently, even if small." — Sahih Muslim.
